Overview - What is the 15 Day Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek like?
The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek -15 Days short trek is a lodge-based journey that offers a compact yet rewarding experience of the Dolpo region. It’s a short and sweet adventure designed to showcase the stunning Phoksundo Lake along with the rich Bon cultural heritage sites nearby.
If you've only got 15 days but still want a real taste of Dolpo, this is the trek we'd point you toward (note that this 15 days includes your time in Kathmandu from arrival till departure).
The trek is best done with round-trip flights, though road connectivity is now available. Overland travel from Kathmandu is manageable and recommended only if flights are disrupted by the Himalayan weather instability.
Either way, this is the trek we recommend to friends who want Dolpo's landscape and culture without signing up for a full expedition.
15 Day Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek Highlights
- Stand at the edge of Phoksundo Lake, one of the deepest lakes in Nepal
- Walk through Bon villages and monasteries you won't find on the Everest or Annapurna trails
- Trek through western Nepal's quieter side with far fewer people on the trail than in the Khumbu or Annapurna region
Difficulty - Who Can Do the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek/Age?
The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is easy. If you have good physical fitness and good morale, this journey can be completed with ease.
Regarding age, it really isn’t a major factor that restricts you. Trekkers of any age with good physical and mental fitness can do this trek. Ideally, an age of 16-65 is recommended by most as it is considered the perfect age range, but even if you don’t fall under this, until you have the will, you are good to go.
The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is suitable for:
- Active travelers with a solid level of cardiovascular fitness who can hike between five and seven hours daily across the diverse Himalayan terrain.
- Seasoned mountain enthusiasts and ambitious beginners with strong mental resilience.
- Adventure seekers with good health and no major respiratory issues, with a few weeks of pre-trek training.

Best Time for the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are your best bets.
Spring days are warm with clouds building most afternoons, so we always tell people to start walking early and bank the clear morning views before anything rolls in.
Autumn is the one we'd pick for you and so do most other trekkers pick. Skies stay clear for days at a stretch, and you get proper visibility of the Kanjirowa Himal and Sisne Himal ranges.
Winter is possible too, but snow near the lake can turn the ridges slick, so it's not for everyone until and unless you have a strong reason.
What Should I Pack for the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek -15 Days?
Travel Insurance for the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek
Travel insurance is non-negotiable. Your policy must explicitly cover:
Trip cancellations, delays, and lost baggage.
Medical insurance, high-altitude trekking coverage up to 6,000m. Standard travel insurance often excludes trekking above certain elevations.
Emergency Evacuation. In case of altitude sickness or injury, evacuation from remote areas can be extremely costly without good insurance.
Accident & injury, protect against trekking - related accidents, includes hospitalization and treatment costs in Nepal or abroad.
Repatriation. Ensure safe return home in case of serious medical emergencies.
Key tips:
Check the Policy altitude limit for what it covers
Verify that the helicopter evacuation is included
Keep the insurance with you, and carry a printed copy of your insurance policy as well
Buy insurance before flying to Nepal
Logistics - Getting to Shey Phoksundo Lake and Trek Permits 2026/27
For getting to the Shey Phoksundo Lake trail, you've got two real options: fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj to Juphal (both ways), or go overland by bus or 4WD jeep to Dunai, Dolpo's district capital. Flying is faster and more comfortable but costs more. The jeep is quicker than the bus but pricier too, and honestly, the public bus can turn a long journey into a genuinely rough one with the stops and road conditions.
The Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit and a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Dolpo.
Shey Phoksundo National Park Permit: NPR 3,000 per person.
Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Permit (RAP): $20 USD for the first week, then $5 USD per extra day.
TIMS Card: Required for registration and safety tracking through your agency.
NOTE: RAP must be arranged in advance through a registered trekking agency, you can't apply for this one yourself.
Solo trekking is not permitted in Lower Dolpo, so you'll need to be on an organized trek with a licensed guide regardless
Altitude Sickness - What to Know for Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek
The trail climbs above 3,500m (11,482ft), which is well within the range where acute mountain sickness (AMS) becomes something to actually watch for, not just something you read about beforehand.
What raises your risk:
Ascending too fast, especially on the early days out of Juphal or Dunai
Sleeping more than 500m higher than the night before
A previous history of altitude sickness
Alcohol or sedatives at altitude
Common symptoms: headache, dizziness, nausea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness, trouble sleeping. These usually show up within a few hours to a couple of days after gaining altitude. The trick is telling this apart from normal end-of-day fatigue; a headache plus nausea or dizziness after climbing is a different thing than just being tired.
If symptoms show up:
Stop ascending and rest at the same altitude
If it doesn't improve within 24 hours, or gets worse, descend 300-1000m
Get help immediately for confusion, breathlessness at rest, or blue lips as these are HACE/HAPE warning signs and are medical emergencies
If your health declines, and your guide says descend, it immediately calls for a descent as your health always comes before finishing the trek, and it’s non-negotiable. We tell this to every trekker on day one.
A number of trekkers carry Diamox as a preventive measure, but it is always best to consult with your doctor regarding your health situation and prescriptions you can take before you leave home; it’s not something to figure out mid-trek. Also, make sure your travel insurance actually covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation. Better be safe than sorry.
If you have a history of altitude sickness or any health concerns, let us know before booking so we can plan the itinerary accordingly.
This information is for general awareness and isn't a substitute for professional medical advice. So, talk to your doctor before the trek, especially regarding medication.
Accommodation on the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek
This is a full lodge-to-lodge trek, so no camping gear or expedition setup is needed.
The rooms in the teahouse/lodges are simple: twin beds, shared bathrooms in most places, and a dining hall that doubles as the only warm room in the building once the stove gets going in the evening.
Hot showers are available at some teahouses for a small fee around USD 2-4, though options thin out the closer you get to the lake. Wi-Fi exists in the bigger villages but gets patchy fast once you're past Dunai, so don’t look for wi-fi on every stop, carry your powerbank, and most importantly some Nepali currency from Kathmandu as the teahouses do not accept cards or foreign currencies.
Food and Meals on the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek
Expect the usual teahouse menu; dal bhat, noodle soups, fried rice, plus a real chance to try Nepali Thali dishes done properly, since this route sits further from the more touristy trekking circuits where menus tend to be designed for foreign palates. Our advice: skip anything trying to be a "Western" dish flown in from Kathmandu, and stick to what's fresh and local. It's better food, and it's what the kitchen actually knows how to cook well.
Because this region sees far fewer trekkers than the Khumbu or Annapurna, food options can be a bit more limited in the smaller villages, and menus shrink the higher and more remote you get. It's worth keeping expectations simple for the days closer to the lake.
NOTE: You can add a cook guide to come along the trek to ensure that your dietary restrictions are kept in mind while preparing any meal for you. They will personally prepare your meal according to your requirement throughout the trek.
Bringing snacks from Kathmandu, chocolate, nuts, energy bars, is still a good habit, though prices here don't climb as steeply as they do on treks that need supplies flown or carried in over several days.
Why Trek Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek with Advent Himalaya Treks?
Anyone can get you to Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek. What we think actually matters is who you're doing it with, and what happens around, before and after the trek.
We're a family-run business, not a franchise. Advent Himalaya Treks was started by Babu with his family by his side and is still run day-to-day by the same family. When you email us or message on WhatsApp before you book, you're talking to Babu who actually knows about the trek you are asking about, not a chatbot or AI.
Your guide has more than a decade of experience. The guide from our team who you will trek with will be an experienced guide who has completed this specific trek at least 9-10 times, and has been the main guide for at least 5 times. Also, an assistant guide with 2-3 years of experience will be on the trek with you if you have a large group.
Come learn to make momo with our family. Before or after your trek, you're invited into our family's kitchen for a hands-on momo-making session either for lunch or dinner; anything that works with you. You will get to learn the recipe that has been in our family for decades, taste the actual local and authentic momo; the one we actually cook at our home. It's a small thing, but it's the experience our guests bring up for a long time. Also, if you want to learn to make any other dishes, our family is ready to share the recipe and cook it together with you.
Our guides and porters are basically part of the family. Many of our guides and porters have been with us since the beginning, climbing each step alongside. Dawa has been with us for 19 years, and is there on almost every trek.
Private airport pickup/dropoff. Either Babu, Meera or both of them will be there with a private vehicle to welcome you at the airport as well as to drop you off for your flight back home.
Tailor made itineraries. This package you see is a standard structure of how the journey looks like. Each and everything seen in this package can be changed and accommodated as per your or your groups’ preference.
We handle the behind the scene stuff so you don't have to worry about it. Permits, flight rerouting, weather delays, gear rental if you need it; we sort it in the background so your energy goes toward the trek, not logistics.
A real, in-person briefing before you hop into your trail. You'll sit down with Babu or your assigned guide at our office or in the hotel you are staying at, walk through the route, the altitude plan, a gear check, and ask anything that's on your mind. Most of our guests tell us that the trip starts feeling real to them after this briefing.
No gear? We've got you covered. Advent Himalaya Treks can provide you with a sleeping bag and down jacket if you don’t have one. And if you require any other gears such as poles, gloves, a headlamp, crampons our team will help you purchase it at Thamel or take you to a rental place if you just want to rent it.
Personalized support. You will be provided with personalized support throughout your time in Nepal. If you or your group are sensitive to new food or have specific allergies, a cook guide will be assigned to you and your team during the trek to ensure that your meal is properly taken care of.
