Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo Trek - 28 days

Dhorpatan – Dolpo Camping Trek
The Dhorpatan–Dolpo Camping Trek is a remarkable journey for those seeking a blend of culture, adventure, and the raw beauty of Nepal’s remote inland regions. This trek offers a rare chance to experience diverse traditions, untouched landscapes, and the thrill of crossing high mountain passes. Starting from Kathmandu and Pokhara, the route takes you through Baglung via Dharapani, across the scenic Jaljala Pass, and along Gurjaghat into the expansive Dhorpatan Valley. From there, the trail winds through Thakur and Pelma, following the famous Yarsha Gumba trail toward Dunai. The adventure continues all the way up to Ringmo Gaon, beside the turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake, before descending along the Phoksundo Khola and concluding at Juphal. We have designed this itinerary to include both camping and tea house trekking, which helps minimize the trip cost and keep it reasonable.

Overview - What is the 28 Day Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo Trek like?

The Dhorpatan-Dolpo trek takes you through the hunting reserve of Dhorpatan and the high, Tibetan history valleys of Lower Dolpo. This region has stayed closed to outsiders for decades and still only sees a fraction of tourists/travellers than Everest or Annapurna region get. If you are looking for a remote experience, along with some comfort, this the perfect mix of both. As the trail combines both teahouse as well as camping, you get both the classic as well as remoteness experience.

The trip officially starts off in Kathmandu, with a drive or flight to Pokhara, and from there you hop into the trail passing through Baglung and Dharapani. You'll cross the Jaljala Pass, then drop into Gurjaghat before entering the Dhorpatan Valley, which is Nepal's only hunting reserve, with a beautiful landscape to walk through. From there the route continues through Thakur and Pelma, passing the Yarsha Gumba trail toward Dunai, the administrative center of Dolpo. The final stretch takes you up to Ringmo Gaon, sitting right beside Phoksundo Lake, one of the deepest lakes in Nepal, before you follow the Phoksundo Khola back down to Juphal, from where you fly out.

Because this route runs through areas with very little tourism infrastructure, we run it as a mix of camping and teahouse trekking. It's not the most comfortable combination, but it's what keeps the trip realistic in both cost and logistics; full camping the whole way would cost way more, and pure teahouse trekking simply isn't possible on some of these trails yet.

28 Day Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo Trek Highlights

  • A genuine cultural mix across one trek; Magar communities near Dhorpatan, Tibetan-influenced villages deeper into Dolpo
  • Long stretches of trail where you will hardly see another trekking group
  • Two high pass crossings with open Himalayan views, including the Jaljala Pass
  • Time at Phoksundo Lake, one of the most striking stops on any Dolpo route
  • A trekking route that still qualifies as genuinely remote, not just "off the beaten path" in name

Difficulty - Who Can Do the Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo  Trek/Age?

This trek sits on the moderate-to-adventurous level as it’s not a technical climb, but the combination of long trail days, camping sections, and genuine remoteness means it asks more of you than a standard teahouse trek in the Everest or Annapurna regions.

Age isn't the deciding factor for this trekking, your general fitness and how well you've prepared are. So if you are in good health and have reasonable fitness, as well as the will, you are good to go.

This trek tends to suit:

  • Trekkers with solid cardiovascular fitness, comfortable hiking 5-7 hours a day over mixed terrain
  • Experienced hikers (this is not a great first trek in Nepal)
  • Anyone in good general health with no major respiratory issues, ideally with a few weeks of pre-trek conditioning behind them

Essential Information

28 Day Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo Trek Cost 2026/2027

The total cost of the 28 Day Trek to the Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo starts from USD $3499 and varies according to your group size. Variation in the price can also result when you customize your own itinerary, making changes such as hotel upgrades, add-ons, extra nights at Kathmandu, or no porter required for the trek, which can increase or decrease the overall cost.

Best Time for the Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo Trek

Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to November) give you the most reliable weather on this route, and honestly, either works well depending on what you're after.

Spring turns the lower sections around Gurjaghat and the Dhorpatan valley into a valley of red and pink rhododendron. It's warm, though afternoon clouds can roll in some days. So, starting your hikes early keeps you ahead of it and gets you the clearest morning views.

Autumn is the more classic choice for this trek. Skies tend to stay clear, and visibility toward Dhaulagiri, Gurja Himal, Puta Himal, and Sisne Himal is usually at its best. Trails are dry, and the steadier temperatures make the long ascent days easier.

Winter trekking is technically possible, but heavy snow near the high passes can make the steeper ridgelines genuinely slippery, so we don't recommend it without strong prior experience or a strong reason.

Travel Insurance for the Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo Trek

Travel insurance is non-negotiable. Your policy must explicitly cover:

  • Trip cancellations, delays, and lost baggage.
  • Medical insurance, high-altitude trekking coverage up to 6,000m. Standard travel insurance often excludes trekking above certain elevations.
  • Emergency Evacuation. In case of altitude sickness or injury, evacuation from remote areas can be extremely costly without good insurance.
  • Accident & injury, protect against trekking - related accidents, includes hospitalization and treatment costs in Nepal or abroad.
  • Repatriation. Ensure safe return home in case of serious medical emergencies.

Key tips:

  • Check the Policy altitude limit for what it covers
  • Verify that the helicopter evacuation is included
  • Keep the insurance with you, and carry a printed copy of your insurance policy as well
  • Buy insurance before flying to Nepal

Logistics - Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo Trek Permits 2026/27

Two permits are required for the Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo Trek:

  • Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit: The fee runs NPR 3,000 (approx. USD 25) per person.
  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Dolpo: USD 20 per person per week for Lower Dolpo

We handle both of these for you. All we need is a scanned copy of your passport, and we take care of the paperwork from there. Since this is a restricted area, the guide carries the original permits and shows them at the checkpoint.

One thing worth knowing upfront: Lower Dolpo permits require a minimum of two trekkers in your group. Even through a registered agency, solo trekkers can't be issued one. If you're traveling alone and don't have a trekking partner lined up, talk to us before booking so we can plan around it.

Altitude Sickness - What to Know for Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo Trek

Altitude sickness doesn't care how fit you are, and on a route this remote, taking it seriously matters even more than usual, because help isn't as close by as it would be in the Khumbu. Knowing your risk factors, and what to actually do the moment symptoms show up, matters more than any other thing.

What increases your risk:

  • Rapid ascent, especially flying directly into high altitude
  • Sleeping more than 500m higher than the previous night
  • A previous history of altitude sickness
  • Alcohol or sedative use at altitude
  • Climbing above 3,500m without proper acclimatization

If symptoms appear:

  • Stop ascending immediately if you notice a headache, nausea, or fatigue
  • Rest at the same altitude until symptoms improve
  • Descend 300-1000m if symptoms worsen or don't improve within 24 hours
  • Seek medical help urgently if severe signs appear : confusion, breathlessness at rest, coughing blood, or blue lips
  • Supplemental oxygen or medication like acetazolamide or dexamethasone can help, but descent remains the most effective treatment

This is exactly where an experienced guide earns their keep. Because this route runs through areas that are genuinely far from the nearest road or airstrip, helicopter evacuation, while available, can take longer to arrange and reach you than it would on a more established trekking route. This is exactly why travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation isn't something to skip on.

If you're considering Diamox, talk to your doctor before you travel, not on the trail. And if you have any history of altitude sickness or ongoing health concerns, mention it before you book so we can plan the trip accordingly.

Accommodation on the Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo Trek

Accommodation on this trek genuinely shifts as you go.

In the more accessible sections around Dhorpatan and closer to Dunai, you'll find basic teahouses, similar to what you'd get on a standard Nepal trek: simple twin rooms, shared bathrooms, a dining hall that doubles as the evening gathering spot.

Beyond that, in the more remote stretches where lodges simply don't exist yet, this becomes a proper camping trek. Our crew carries tents, kitchen equipment, fuel, and food, with a dedicated cook preparing meals at each camp. It's a different rhythm than teahouse trekking, but for a lot of trekkers, that's the part they are excited about as this is what trekking in Nepal looked like everywhere, once.

Food and Meals on the Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo Trek

Food follows the same two-stage pattern as accommodation. Where teahouses are available, you'll get the familiar Nepal trekking staples : dal bhat, noodle soups, fried rice plus whatever the local kitchen does well.

In the camping sections, meals are prepared fresh by our kitchen crew at each stop, and tend to be simple, filling, and built around what's practical to cook and carry at altitude. The remote sections have very limited lodging and food supply, so a trekking crew normally carries tents, kitchen equipment, fuel, and food, with a cook preparing meals, which are all delicious and hygienic.

Vegetarian trekkers or trekkers with any sort of allergies are advised to inform us when booking the trek, so that we can inform the tea houses about your condition beforehand to prevent any kind of mix up in your meals.

NOTE: You can add a cook guide to come along the trek to ensure that your dietary restrictions are kept in mind while preparing any meal for you. They will personally prepare your meal according to your requirement throughout the trek.

Also, it is always a best option to bring snacks from Kathmandu if you can. Chocolate, nuts, energy bars are cheaper there, and very useful to grab a bite during your trek or on the Kala Patthar and base camp days when options are limited.

Why Trek Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo with Advent Himalaya Treks?

Anyone can get you to Dhorpatan - Lower Dolpo. What we think actually matters is who you're doing it with, and what happens around, before and after the trek.

  • We're a family-run business, not a franchise. Advent Himalaya Treks was started by Babu with his family by his side and is still run day-to-day by the same family. When you email us or message on WhatsApp before you book, you're talking to Babu who actually knows about the trek you are asking about, not a chatbot or AI.
  • Your guide has more than a decade of experience. The guide from our team who you will trek with will be an experienced guide who has completed this specific trek at least 9-10 times, and has been the main guide for at least 3 times. Also, an assistant guide with 2-3 years of experience will be on the trek with you if you have a large group.
  • Come learn to make momo with our family. Before or after your trek, you're invited into our family's kitchen for a hands-on momo-making session either for lunch or dinner; anything that works with you. You will get to learn the recipe that has been in our family for decades, taste the actual local and authentic momo; the one we actually cook at our home. It's a small thing, but it's the experience our guests bring up for a long time. Also, if you want to learn to make any other dishes, our family is ready to share the recipe and cook it together with you.
  • Our guides and porters are basically part of the family. Many of our guides and porters have been with us since the beginning, climbing each step alongside. Dawa has been with us for 19 years, and is there on almost every trek.
  • Private airport pickup/dropoff. Either Babu, Meera or both of them will be there with a private vehicle to welcome you at the airport as well as to drop you off for your flight back home.
  • Tailor made itineraries. This package you see is a standard structure of how the journey looks like. Each and everything seen in this package can be changed and accommodated as per your or your groups’ preference.
  • We handle the behind the scene stuff so you don't have to worry about it. Permits, flight rerouting, weather delays, gear rental if you need it; we sort it in the background so your energy goes toward the trek, not logistics.
  • A real, in-person briefing before you hop into your trail. You'll sit down with Babu or your assigned guide at our office or in the hotel you are staying at, walk through the route, the altitude plan, a gear check, and ask anything that's on your mind. Most of our guests tell us that the trip starts feeling real to them after this briefing.
  • No gear? We've got you covered. Advent Himalaya Treks can provide you with a sleeping bag and down jacket if you don’t have one. And if you require any other gears such as poles, gloves, a headlamp, crampons our team will help you purchase it at Thamel or take you to a rental place if you just want to rent it.
  • Personalized support. You will be provided with personalized support throughout your time in Nepal. If you or your group are sensitive to new food or have specific allergies, a cook guide will be assigned to you and your team during the trek to ensure that your meal is properly taken care of.
