Nepal Travel Information

Planning a trip to Nepal? Whether you're trekking in the Himalayas, exploring ancient cultural sites, or embarking on a wildlife adventure, being well prepared will help you make the most of your journey. Here you'll find essential information on visas, weather, health and safety, accommodation, currency, and other practical tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Visa Requirements

Most visitors can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at designated land border crossings. Tourist visas are available for 15, 30, and 90 days. Your passport should be valid for at least six months from the date of entry. Visa extensions are available if you wish to stay longer.

Best Time to Visit

Nepal can be visited throughout the year, but spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are considered the best seasons. Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and pleasant temperatures, while autumn offers clear skies and excellent mountain views. Winter provides quieter trails and crisp weather, whereas the monsoon season transforms the countryside into a lush green landscape.

Weather and Climate

Nepal's geography ranges from tropical lowlands to high Himalayan peaks, resulting in diverse climates. Temperatures vary greatly depending on altitude. Lower regions remain warm throughout the year, while mountain areas experience colder conditions, especially during mornings and nights.

Arrival Information

Most international travelers arrive through Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Upon arrival, visitors can exchange currency, purchase local SIM cards, and arrange transportation to their hotel. Advent Himalaya Treks provides airport pickup services (except for classic packages) to ensure a comfortable and hassle-free start to your journey.

Currency and Money

The official currency of Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). ATMs are widely available in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and other major towns. Credit cards are accepted in many hotels and restaurants, although carrying cash is recommended when traveling to remote regions. Currency exchange facilities are readily available in tourist areas.

Accommodation

Nepal offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget guesthouses to luxury hotels. During trekking adventures, travelers typically stay in traditional tea houses that provide comfortable rooms and freshly prepared meals. Facilities become more basic at higher elevations, but the warm hospitality of local communities makes every stay memorable.

Food and Drinks

Nepali cuisine is diverse and flavorful. Dal Bhat, a traditional meal consisting of rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and curry, is the staple food throughout the country. Momos, noodles, soups, and a variety of international dishes are also widely available. Vegetarian meals are easy to find, and purified or bottled drinking water is recommended during your travels.

Health and Safety

Nepal is generally a safe destination for travelers. Visitors planning high-altitude treks should be aware of altitude sickness and allow sufficient time for acclimatization. Drinking purified water, maintaining good hygiene, and following the guidance of experienced guides will help ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for all visitors. Policies should include coverage for medical expenses, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, and loss of personal belongings. For trekking activities, helicopter evacuation coverage is highly advisable.

Trekking Permits

Certain trekking regions require permits and conservation fees. Depending on your itinerary, these may include the TIMS Card, National Park Permits, Conservation Area Permits, or Restricted Area Permits. Advent Himalaya Treks arranges all necessary permits on behalf of our guests.

Packing List

Packing requirements depend on the season and destination. Essential items include comfortable trekking boots, layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and personal medications. Travelers heading to higher elevations should also carry warm clothing and appropriate cold-weather gear.

Internet and Communication

Local SIM cards are readily available from major providers and offer affordable mobile data packages. Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and many tea houses, although connectivity may be slower in remote mountain regions.

Electricity

Nepal operates on 230V electricity. The most commonly used plug types are C, D, and M. Travelers are advised to carry a universal adapter for convenience.

Cultural Etiquette

Nepal is rich in traditions and cultural heritage. Visitors are encouraged to dress modestly, remove shoes before entering temples and homes, and respect local customs and religious practices. A friendly greeting of "Namaste" is always appreciated.
