The Dolpo region is one of Nepal’s most remote and mystical trekking destinations, divided into Upper Dolpo and Lower Dolpo. It is famous for its rugged landscapes, turquoise lakes, and preserved Tibetan Buddhist and Bon culture.
Upper Dolpo

Restricted Area Permits
Both Upper and Lower Dolpo are classified as restricted areas, requiring special permits.
Trekkers must travel with a registered guide and agency. Upper Dolpo permits are more expensive and strictly regulated.
Flights In and Out
Treks usually begin with a flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal (Dolpo’s small airstrip).
Juphal serves as the gateway for both Upper and Lower Dolpo treks.
Best Season to Trek
- Spring (April–May): Clear skies, blooming landscapes, and moderate temperatures.
- Autumn (September–October): Stable weather, excellent visibility, and ideal trekking conditions.
- Summer/Monsoon: Heavy rains make trails difficult, though Dolpo’s arid terrain is less affected than other regions.
- Winter: Harsh cold and snow block high passes, making Upper Dolpo inaccessible.
